About Deus Ex

I call myself Deus Ex, it's a play on my name, so now I guess it is my name. I'm an independent artist in Manchester, New Hampshire. I've been building something of a name for myself these past couple years, all in the hearts and minds of people I interact with every day. Years ago, when I was a child, I had a vision for how I wanted my life to go. hardly does anyone's story go the way they plan to write it. But therein lies the beauty of it all. After all, how stale does a life look when you have every goal marker made and every bump in the road accounted for? Imperfection and uncertainty are what makes the ride worth speaking about. I spent the majority of my life allowing myself to be distracted from my dream and artistic mission with wild side missions, personal tragedies, and rampant drug use. These events and mindsets made me forget, I forgot who I was, forgot what brought me joy, which had resulted in me always outsourcing personal fulfillment externally. You spend 20 years like that, and I promise you that you won't know who you are nor will you know where you're going in life. Like the first stanza of Dante's Inferno, you will be in the middle of a dark forest facing beasts. Then in 2018, I found myself sitting in a prison cell and a kid came into my cell asking me what I thought about a design he had drawn. It wasn't great but it wasn't terrible, but I remember thinking to myself how I know it could have been done better. I grabbed a sheet of paper and pencil, and I sketched out a small thumbnail of a nude woman, using notan to give it energy and asked that kid what he thought. He told me I was a way better artist than he was and, in that moment, it was if I had suddenly remembered who I was and where I wanted to go. From that point on I brushed up on my skills and had to relearn a whole lot of forgotten passions but the whole way I had to self-educate. I've never taken and art course, never had a fundamental course. Everything I know I learn through looking at the masters, and through trial and error. But's that's how it's always been for me, even when I was young, I'd draw the figure in proportion because that's what made sense to me. Since that day in prison, I've spent every waking moment in pursuit of reclaiming a dream.
